My wife gave me a book called “Uncommon Fathers”, edited by Donald J. Meyer. One of the chapters is called “The Bicycle”, in which the chapter’s author-father refers to his son’s “normal ghost”, essentially a glimpse at times of what he would’ve been like without Down Syndrome and letting go of that. Many people have children because they think it’s a requirement. Some try to impose themselves on those children to be something they want them to be instead of what they could be, still others substitute money and things for time and love. The interesting thing about having a child with special needs is that’s nearly impossible to do. In most cases, you have to except who they are and try to make their lives as happy and productive as possible, which is really what every parent should be doing, isn’t it?
